But if you’d rather not wave your controller around you can perform the exact same move with a simple click of the right analog stick. Doom does take advantage of the Switch’s motion controls, but their only purpose is an alternate way to perform glory kills, which is a pretty cool and immersive way to dismember a demon. But, after a few tweaks in the sensitivity settings, slaying through hordes of demons quickly began feeling more intuitive and natural. I recommend leaving that on - it looks worse without.Īt first, playing with Joy-Con controllers did take a little bit of getting used to. This is partly due to the high motion-blur settings which are enabled by default. Especially on a big-screen TV.īut considering standing still for even a few seconds will get you killed, many of Doom’s graphical imperfections aren’t obvious during gameplay. That means that when you get up close to take a good look at characters and objects it’s pretty clear that they have a fair amount less detail than on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. In both handheld and docked mode, Doom appears to have a dynamic resolution that caps out at 720p, and its textures are squeezed into just 22 gigabytes. However, that steady frame rate does come at a price. It’s no 60 frames per second, but it works. Whether I was playing docked or undocked, Doom appeared to run at a mostly consistent 30 frames per second, with only a few minor dips-specifically when the action got really heated-but never too badly. I have heard many won't buy because of the lack of physical release, but despite this curious decision by Panic Button (the game is a lean 18GBs and could easily fit on cartridge), these guys still deserve your support because this port must have taken an insane level of dedication and talent to release in the quality state that it did, and in an era where big triple A studios continuously insult fans with half-assed releases filled to the brim with microtransactions and released in a broken state, this type of effort is worthy of the highest recommendation and support.Doom appears to have a dynamic resolution that caps out at 720p. The fact you can get pretty much the same experience on Switch is nothing short of arcane wizardry, and if you have any interest in Doom or shooters in general, then this is a must buy. The game runs at a remarkably stable 30FPS, with very quick load times, responsive gameplay aided by some nifty gyro-controls, and despite the downgrade in graphics, when played in handheld as you dash, meathook, rocket launch and power punch your way through this masterpiece you will feel you are playing the exact same game that is a benchmark for the latest gen consoles and PCs. Yes the graphics and effects take a necessary hit, and you are playing at 30fps, but make no mistake, this IS Doom Eternal, the full experience, on a little tablet released back in 2016 with a 1.02 GHZ CPU. Yes the graphics and Panic Button absolutely crushes it out of the park with this remarkable and unfathomable port of Doom Eternal on Switch.
